چکیده

The objective of this research is to quantify the effects of liquid swine manure application on antibiotic and nutrient (N and P) losses via surface runoff and subsurface drainage under a conventional (moldboard plowing) and a conservation (chisel plowing) tillage system. The field experiment is set up at the University of Minnesota Southwest Research and Outreach Center, Lamberton, Minnesota. The soil at the experimental site is a Webster clay loam soil (fine-loamy, mixed mesic Typic Haplaquoll), a common soil series in the Minnesota River Basin. The experiment is a randomized split-plot design with four replications (Figure 1). The main plots consist of two tillage treatments: (1) fall moldboard plowing followed by two passes of field cultivation before corn planting; and (2) chisel

Dairy Diet Phosphorus Effects on Phosphorus Losses in Runoff from Land-applied Manure

Phosphorus (P) losses from land-applied manure can contribute to nonpoint source pollution of surface waters. Dietary P levels influence P concentrations in animal manures and may affect P losses from land-applied manure. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of dairy diet P concentration on P losses in runoff from landapplied manure. Manures with P concentrations of 0.48 and...

Rate of fall-applied liquid swine manure: effects on runoff transport of sediment and phosphorus.

Reducing the delivery of phosphorus (P) from land-applied manure to surface water is a priority in many watersheds. Manure application rate can be controlled to manage the risk of water quality degradation. The objective of this study was to evaluate how application rate of liquid swine manure affects the transport of sediment and P in runoff. Liquid swine manure was land-applied and incorporat...

Surface runoff losses of phosphorus from Virginia soils amended with turkey manure using phytase and high available phosphorus corn diets.

Many states have passed legislation that regulates agricultural P applications based on soil P levels and crop P uptake in an attempt to protect surface waters from nonpoint P inputs. Phytase enzyme and high available phosphorus (HAP) corn supplements to poultry feed are considered potential remedies to this problem because they can reduce total P concentrations in manure. However, less is know...

Sediment and Nutrient Losses from Field-scale Cropland Plots Treated with Animal Manure and Inorganic Fertilizer

A field-scale plot study was conducted at Virginia Tech’s Prices Fork Research Farm, to evaluate the transport of nutrients in runoff from manure and fertilizer applied at P-based agronomic rates to cropland planted to corn. Simulated rainfall events representing 2to 10-year storms in southwest Virginia, occurring 1 and 2 days following manure and fertilizer application were used to generate ru...

Reducing phosphorus runoff from swine manure with dietary phytase and aluminum chloride.

Phosphorus (P) runoff from fields fertilized with swine (Sus scrofa) manure has been implicated in eutrophication. Dietary modification and manure amendments have been identified as best management practices to reduce P runoff from manure. This study was conducted to compare the effects of dietary modification and aluminum chloride (AlCl3) manure amendments on reducing P in swine manure and run...
